| The Black Jaguar Foundation (BJF) is a non-profit organization with the black jaguar as symbol for the alarming condition of the rainforest. Our goal is a tangible contribution to protecting the natural habitat of the jaguar - benefiting millions of other species including ourselves. BJF's main project: to realize a ‘Biodiversity Corridor’ in Central Brazil, where unique ecosystems and all of its wildlife will be preserved. Tens of millions of trees will be reforested. This 2,000 km long corridor will become the longest of its kind in the world! This is highly needed as the drastic deforestation continues. The black jaguar lives in dense, impassable forests in Central and South America. Tragically this elusive powerful cat finds itself in great danger. The human footprint has taken its toll. Deforestation has decreased its habitat with 65%. Together with the ongoing hunting, only 3% of the historic jaguar population has survived. As the top predator, the jaguar is required to maintain a balance in its ecosystem such as the Amazon Rainforest. Saving the jaguar is saving its ecosystem that is also vital to us humans - as it supplies 20% of the world’s oxygen - filters 30% of all sweet water - is the source of 25% of all modern medicines. |
